Colombian Leader Declares 'I Would Take Up Arms Once More' if American Forces Launches an Attack.

President Trump and President Gustavo Petro have intensified the volume of their exchange, further raising strains bilaterally following US forces targeted Venezuela in an operation to oust the leader of Venezuela Nicolás Maduro from his position.

"He has cocaine mills and production sites and his time is running out," the US president stated.

Escalating Rhetoric coupled with Accusations

Addressing reporters over the weekend, Trump suggested similar armed intervention against Colombia, claiming the nation is “very sick too” and led by a problematic figure involved in producing the drug and distributing it to America."

While Colombia remains the globe's biggest producer of cocaine, authorities have found no indication implicating Gustavo Petro, who was elected in 2022, is in any way tied to the trade.

A Strained Relationship

This nation has long been a key ally of the US in the campaign against drug trafficking and benefited from cross-party backing from American politicians, but relations have deteriorated markedly since Trump came to office.

Colombia’s illicit drug economy is predominantly run by criminal organizations like the Clan del Golfo, the National Liberation Army (ELN) and renegade units of the demobilized Farc, most of its former fighters disbanded subsequent to a landmark accord.

Petro's Strong Rebuttal

In response to a query whether a military operation comparable to Venezuela was a possibility for Colombia, Trump responded: "I like the sound of that from my perspective."

Petro, a former leftist guerrilla who demobilised in the 1990s, firmly denied Trump's claims. "I am no an illegitimate leader nor am I a narco," he stated.

"Trump speaks without information. Cease defaming me," he expressed in a message.

"Should American forces attack civilians, they will turn into a multitude of fighters in the hills. And if they detain me, which many of the country admires and supports, they will unleash the ‘jaguar’ of the populace," Petro warned.

From Guerrilla to Statesman

Petro spent some years as a young man belonging in the left-wing M-19 insurgent movement although reports indicate to have ever engaged in fighting. Upon leaving the group, he participated in creating a new constitution over three decades ago and later became an influential politician. He held the office of mayor of the Colombian capital before winning the nation's highest office.

"I pledged to never again hold a weapon again ... but for Colombia I will take up arms again," he affirmed.

Heightened Measures and Cross-Political Opposition

The Colombian defence minister announced that the president’s protection team was strengthened.

Several members of Colombia’s political right have allied themselves with Trump, however, leaders from all sides of Colombian politics have denounced the possibility of American military action against their nation.

Political and Economic Strains

American authorities withdrew Petro’s visa following he urged US troops to disobey any illegal orders. In October, authorities imposed asset freezes targeting Petro, his wife and a number of close collaborators.

Simultaneously as the US increased its forces in the region and striking alleged narcotics traffickers to pressure Venezuela’s Maduro, American military assets also carried out strikes on boats in Pacific waters off the Colombian coast.
