Individuals Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Put On Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Dieters

Obesity treatment often requires ongoing approaches.

A recent study reveals that people who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese people often shed about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Individuals buying these drugs must be aware of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery means a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Researchers emphasize that people who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

The Reason for the Rapid Regain

Experts suggest the mode of action of the injections is key to understanding the amplified regain.

The injections copy a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls feelings of fullness.

"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."

An Ongoing Condition?

Health authorities recommend the jabs for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.

This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Individuals who have stopped the jabs report a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"I experienced a trigger activating and I was suddenly starving," recalled an individual.

The struggle is worsened if patients have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Widespread Adoption

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, clinicians emphasize that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss relies on integrated behavioural management.
